New Caledonia, less than 2 hours flying time from Brisbane and with a per capita GDP of about AUD36,000 p.a., ranks as one of Australia’s top 21 export destinations by a number of Australian companies doing business in the location. As a major trading partner this presents unique benefits for both countries.

At present, New Caledonia’s economy is largely driven by the mining industry where nickel production accounts for approximately 20% of GDP. Other major sources of income are derived from extracting magnesium, iron and cobalt while tourism and fiscal transfers from France are important contributors to the economy.

To assist delegates understand the referendum on New Caledonia’s constitutional status scheduled for 4 November 2018, one of Australia’s foremost experts on the French Pacific, Ms Denise Fisher, Europa Visiting Fellow, Centre for European Studies, Australian National University, will address the Forum on “The Coming Referendum: What It Means”. Ms Fisher is a former Australian Consul-General in New Caledonia.
